Charity, Sincerity and Wisdom

Charity, the cheerful giver, commands the center of the painting with Sincerity on the left and Wisdom on the right. Charity is the foremost virtue in the spiritual life, but the three are tied together. Charity without sincerity or right intention becomes hypocrisy, while charity without wisdom or truth becomes folly.

The charitable, the sincere and the wise are the opposite of the evildoer, the hypocrite and the fool.

Jesus berates the scribes and Pharisees for being hypocrites and blind fools. Those who called out, “Lord! Lord!”, claiming to have made many mighty works in his name, He called evildoers.

It seems then, that the three types of people who risk choosing hell are the hypocrite, the evildoer and the fool.

Consequently, for any thought, word or deed to be truly charitable, it must be directed by sincerity and guided by wisdom.
