Detachment

How much do you weigh — not physically but spiritually? Which measure of weight can be accorded the soul?

Every attachment that clings to our souls weighs us down. While something may be good in itself, unless it deems to glorify God, then it is for the glory of ourselves.

Material things are more obvious attachments than our need for an impressive self image, for skill or intellectual superiority, for gaining control, or hoarding our time, for people, animals, entertainment or adventure, etc. In fact, anything may become an attachment, whereas none of these need be so when we avail ourselves of them for the glory of God.

In the honest assessment of our motives, the challenge is to free our souls so as to belong to God and God alone.

This painting represents layers of attachments, in themselves good or bad, peeling away. The soul, indicated in yellow above, is detaching from these layers in preparation for union with God. My motive in painting this is to ask myself, “How much do I weigh?”
