God is Love; and among other things, God is Truth, God is Beauty, God is Goodness, God is Power, God is Justice and God is Mercy.

Merciful may be an adjective to describe God, but Mercy is the noun that is His essence. He is not only truthful but is Truth itself; not only good but Goodness itself, etc. He is the source by which these metaphysical adjectives may be known. Contemplating this mystery is not only food for a lifetime, but will be our unlimited food in the afterlife. In this painting I contemplated Justice and Mercy.

Justice, painted as a black and white band on the left, is patterned by angels versus demons that point downward. Mercy is shown in a red and white band on the right. The white figures are those of saints, forgiven, redeemed, and made white as snow by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus.

God is eternal Justice and eternal Mercy yet these sources could not be exercised before He created anything. It seems that Justice was first employed with the rebellion of angels, and Mercy with the fall of man.
