Meek and Gentle

In my experience of God and His friendship with me, one word comes to mind; gentleness. God has always been so gentle with me.

In this painting of the child, Jesus, I am thinking of His gentleness. He is letting a bird rest on His finger, not clutching the bird, or holding it captive. He does the same with us, who like birds, fly from one diversion to another. He encourages us to rest upon Him, and to trust that He would never hurt us.

When we sin or fly away from Him, He approaches us gently so as not to startle us into fleeing further from Him. When we know we are in sin we are afraid of God’s hand. But Jesus who described Himself as meek and humble of heart (Mt 11:29) has thus revealed to us that God is meek. Being meek or gentle is the opposite of lashing out in vengeful anger. So, we can either stay far from Him in our sin and our fear, or return to His loving, outstretched hand. How comforting to know that God is all patience, all mercy and all gentleness!
