Mary gave us the infant Jesus; we gave Him back to her a dead man.

She stands alone in her pain. The intensity of her pain is unique to humanity. She, the spotless one, holds the Perfect, Innocent Man-God in her arms, with the memory of thirty-three years of love-filled, supreme relationship between them.

She sits at the foot of skull-rock (shown on the left side of painting) experiencing the worst possible evil committed by humankind — deicide — the murder of God! Alone in her desert, the Immaculata is surrounded by the force of human filth.

The worst has already taken place. No evil, man can do, can top this. No matter what develops in today’s world, it is never so bad that we cannot love God while we are in it. Thanks to Jesus’ sacrifice in redeeming us, we now live in what follows this scene.

We are an Easter People.
